The winners of the Personal Finance Society Media Awards 2022 were announced today (1 November) by comedian, actress and television presenter Sally Phillips during a ceremony at the Birmingham NEC.

Financial advisers voted The Telegraph and The i Newspaper their joint winner of the National Newspaper Personal Finance Section of the year while the award for Trade Press Personal Finance Publication of the year went to FTAdviser.

More than 200 Personal Finance Society members voted for their favourite personal finance titles in a poll conducted by the professional body this summer.

A panel of personal finance experts decided the following journalists produced the best articles, copy and broadcast features this year:

Highly Commended: Jeff Prestridge, Mail on Sunday

Runner-up: Marc Shoffman, The i Newspaper

National Newspaper Personal Finance Newcomer Winner: Rachel Mortimer, The Telegraph

Judges praised her for tackling the important topic of the growth in cyber crime and explaining it in a way that will help readers avoid falling foul of fraudsters.

Personal Finance Consumer Champion Winner: Jeff Prestridge, Mail on Sunday

The judges praised him for achieving “great outcomes for so many consumers” and “championing the fact insurance customers are being penalised for their loyalty even after regulation was introduced to address this.”

Highly Commended: Katie Morley, The Telegraph

Trade Press Personal Finance Journalist Winner: Simoney Kyriakou, FTAdviser

Judges applauded her work adding they “respect her journalism and the impact of her articles goes far and wide.”

Highly Commended: Kevin O’Donnell, Financial Planning Today

The journalist categories of the Media Awards were judged by Sarah Lord, past President of the Personal Finance Society, Carla Brown, Founder and Managing Director of Oakmere Wealth Management and winner of the Personal Finance Society’s Chartered Financial Planner of the Year Award, Melissa Collett, Professional Standards Director of the Chartered Insurance Institute, and Mark Hutchinson, Membership Director of the Personal Finance Society.

Mark Hutchinson, Membership Director of the Personal Finance Society, said: “While front pages are dominated by concerning headlines about the cost-of-living crisis, personal finance journalists, sections and publications are educating consumers about what they can do to carefully manage their money and avoid fraudsters.

“This year’s winning journalists and publications shared their knowledge about personal finance management to ensure their readers know whether their goals are realistic in the current economic climate.

“I applaud the journalists and publications for informing and helping their readers improve their financial resilience even during these challenging times.”
